Known for the serenity and optimism of his poetry, and his appreciation for the quiet pleasures of life, Wilbur has always been a marked contrast to his more anguished contemporaries, like Robert Lowell and John Berryman. Wilbur`s long and successful career has included 17 collections of poetry as well as criticism, translations (particularly of Molihre), prose works, and children`s books; he has been the U.S. poet laureate, a National Book Award recipient, and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
