In conversations with his friend of some 40 years, coauthor Russ Cochran, Atkins recounts episodes from a life spent playing music, including his poverty stricken Georgia upbringing, where he heard the radio performances of his first big influence, Merle Travis, his first professional job, as a fiddler for Bill Carlisle and his Dixieland Swingers, and his subsequent appointment as staff guitarist for a Knoxville, Tennessee, radio station. In addition, the book features gorgeously reproduced photographs of the 60-odd guitars in Atkins' possession, from his first Silvertone, bought on credit from Sears Roebuck in the early 1940s, to the cherry red archtop Country Gentleman guitar he made famous. Throughout, CHET ATKINS maintains the guitarist's chatty, wryly witty tone (when once asked to define the Nashville Sound, he rattled the coins in his pocket), and contains a wealth of invaluable informational tidbits for country music enthusiasts.
