A great story about the advent of modern professional surfing. I grew up surfing during this era so it was particularly intriguing for me. The bronzed aussies were bold, brash, innovative, ambitious and very talented surfers who shook up the status quo. The Hawaiians were very talented as well, but this new group of surfers invaded their backyard serving notice that they were there to take over as the dominant surfing force. This did not sit well with the local Hawaiians who were still dealing with the fact that their islands were taken from them. Now they saw their heritage usurped as well, and this could not be tolerated. Enter the blackshorts or "Da Hui" who set to correct this wrong. Do to intimidation, threats and violence these new surfers sought refuge at the Kuilima resort armed with baseball bats and tennis rackets for protection, while famed Hawaiian icon Eddie Aikau attempted to sort things out and bring the spirit of aloha back to the islands. Eventually the aussies were allowed to surf and compete again thus ushering in the era professional surfing. The efforts of these young Australians made what professional surfing is today; unique, exciting and dramatic. The cinemaphotography was state of the art. The "Freeride" sequences are amazing. The surfing is fluid and flawless. Truly poetry in motion. The interviews with the Australian Rabbit Bartholomew and South African Shaun Tomson are heartfelt and poignant . Younger surfers may not appreciate the "old school" manuvers and find it less radical, it's still a glimpse in to the history of our sport with many of the surfers featured here serving as major influences to todays surfing superstars. This was an era when no one perceived surfing as a way to make a living and surfers were considered societal dropouts. Now they have world tours with multi million dollar contracts in a global multi billion industry. Like " Men Who Ride Mountains." and "Dog Town and Z-Boys." this DVD is a must to have in any library for the surfing enthusiast.
