Cornetist Bobby Hackett cut ten albums for Capitol over a six-year period beginning in 1953. A pair of these were reissued on one CD by Jazz Plaza Music in 2010. The compilation`s two-dozen tracks are excellent examples of this mainstream jazz master`s approach to tasteful instrumental presentation. The Bobby Hackett Quartet was recorded in March 1959 with Dave McKenna, Bob Carter, and Dick Scott. This disc does not include material from Hawaii Swings, a record that came together at three sessions in April of 1959. Hackett`s final Capitol album, Easy Beat, was taped in November of the same year, with a rhythm section consisting of Pepe Moreale, Bill Cronk, and Buzzy Drootin. Everything here is skillfully presented, and Hackett demonstrates the durable finesse which characterized his efforts beginning in the mid-`30s and for decades thereafter. He would continue to make excellent records throughout the `60s, and into the early `70s as well. If you like what you hear on this disc, you`ll want to investigate his live recordings from the Roosevelt Grill (which feature trombonist Vic Dickenson) and the superb 1972 recording Strike Up the Band with guest saxophonist Zoot Sims. The Bobby Hackett Quartet is a welcome addition to the slowly increasing number of Hackett reissues. Many will find its friendly blend of snappy standards and relaxed romantic ballads to be the ideal soundtrack for intimate gatherings, congenial meal preparation, and daytime driving. ~ arwulf arwulf
