As the title (perhaps inspired by the DeNiro film of the previous year) suggests, "Midnight Run" has a decidedly late-night feel to it. It`s full of the sort of `60s Southern soul and blues songs you might hear in a smoky dive where the musicians are playing more for themselves than for the audience. The material is strong, and Bland`s phrasing is more magisterial than ever, particularly on "Keep It a Secret," a sad cheating song in much the same vein as James Carr`s "Dark End of the Street," as well as on an excellent cover of Bill Wither`s "Ain`t No Sunshine," and the concluding, gospelish, "Starting All Over Again."
