In a demonstration of the international nature of jazz, Australian cornetist Bob Barnard meets a number of Swedish musicians to play good, old-fashioned New Orleans jazz. Widely recognized in his homeland, Barnard is not as well known in North America, though he has recorded for the Canadian Sackville label. But there is no doubting his power and ability to swing as a soloist, as he interprets music made popular by King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. Barnard hardly limits himself to typical repertoire, as his interpretation of Fats Waller`s "Blue Turning Grey Over You" is a winner, while also showcasing clarinetist Lars-Erik Eriksson and pianist Kalle Nygren. He also adapts "I`m Getting Sentimental Over You" and "Blame It on My Youth" (hardly typical Dixieland fare) into New Orleans jazz arrangements. Pianist Johan Bijkerk is heard on "Mahogany Hall Stomp," "West End Blues," and "Cornet Chop Suey," while he also plays and sings his original tribute to Jelly Roll Morton, "Jelly in Mind." Issued by the Swedish label Opus 3, this CD will likely be hard to find outside of Europe. ~ Ken Dryden
