While he`s an R&B recording artist in his own right, Billy "the Kid" Emerson is perhaps more well-known for writing the rockabilly smash "Red Hot" immortalized by Billy Lee Riley on Sun and then Robert Gordon in the New Wave era. As a prospective solo act, Emerson moved around from label to label, cutting singles for Sun, Vee-Jay, and Chess. In 2009, the Bear Family issued a deluxe 20-track compilation that gathers these sundry cuts, and includes a 44-page booklet based on interviews with Emerson and Sun founder Sam Phillips, who professed great admiration for Emerson`s songwriting. Emerson`s own version of "Red Hot" is included. of course. as is "When It Rains, It Pours," eventually to be covered by Elvis, among others.
