Between a Rock and a Hard Place is the story of Aron Ralston, a mountain climber who gets his arm stuck under a boulder and is trapped there for 5 days with no one knowing where he is. He is hiking on a simple course for him and a large 400 pound boulder falls on his arm and pins it against a wall. For 127 hours he is trapped with just two burritos, a few liters of water, and isn’t able to sleep due to the fact he isn’t able to sit. Aron eventually runs out of water and has to try and drink his bottled urine. He reminisces in memories of past climbs while chopping at the boulder with a knife with little effect. Overall, I’d give Between a Rock and a Hard Place a 3.5/10. It isn’t anything that I’d recommend if you are looking for something exciting. It isn’t even something I could sit through again. It can get very dull and dry. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good documentary of what happened, but you can pretty much just skip the 200 pages of useless material.

Not a great book
from Dayton, Ohio,  Jan 28, 2012

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is a story of the most extreme survival that highlights the determination and will of human beings to survive. In my opinion this story has many positive and negative aspects. The way this story is written includes one or two miniature “adventures” between each chapter of the main story. This gives the story an interesting twist, but I often find myself wondering if I am still reading the main story or another of his adventures. Even though they are, in my opinion, very interesting and add to the book, I feel that their placement throughout the story could be better. Since each mini-adventure is only several pages long, the majority of the book focuses on his survival while his arm is trapped between a rock and a granite wall. The story seems fairly interesting, and holds my attention rather well in the beginning, but, seeing that it’s a 354 page book, after those first couple chapters it becomes boring very quickly. Each day seemed the same to me. He would make minor adjustments to become more comfortable and would attempt to free his arm, but after the first attempts he made it obvious that the rock trapping it wouldn’t budge. At this point I was almost 100 pages into the story and, based on the cover, the conclusion was obvious. I feel that if he would have summarized his experiences into one or two chapters it would have been just as efficient and more interesting. Regardless, during the end of the book the story seems to pick back up, and I once again enjoy it. The second thing that I noticed while reading this story is that Aron Ralston doesn’t write like a regular author would. In many ways it adds to the story, because he can include his own emotions and feelings about his experiences, but it also takes away from the story. It feels to me like his writing is unprofessional. The story seems to lack the style that I have seen and loved in so many other adventure books. I assume that this is because he is a full time mountain climber and a part time author and admire his determination to share his experiences. Overall, I did not care for the story; however, it did have select chapters that I found interesting. It included many of his feelings and emotions that made the story interesting, but seems to be drawn out to much. I feel that at several points throughout his story he could remove excess information to give it a more professional feel and make it a more enjoyable read.

An Incredible Read
from Bill Spring Lake Hts., N.J.,  Jan 24, 2011

If you can get past the explicit description of the actual amputation, and this book is much more then a man who cuts his hand off, you will not be able to put in down. The "inner book" to this is very zen. It questions the reasons we live and the reasons we choose to endure the pains of life. It puts you face to face with why we live and why we can choose to die, physically or mentally. A great read and a testament to the true value of life, what matters, and what doesn't.
