I would have given 5 stars, but I have to reserve that one for the 3-ring binder version of this excellent starter cookbook. This paperback version, though, has everything the binder has in a more compact, space-saving and handy edition. I purchased this book for my daughter and son who are setting up their respective households. They were looking for a cookbook that would give them time-tested recipes with easy-to-find ingredients as well as a reference book that would help them set up their kitchens, stock their pantries and instruct them on basic techniques. You can't do better than this cookbook for meeting all those needs. It makes great reading to reinforce an experienced home cook's base of knowledge, and it gives the new homemaker, male or female (the name Betty in the title notwithstanding), an excellent place from where to start.
