Artist: Orton, Beth
Description:
Personnel: Beth Orton (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rob Moose, Caroline Shaw, Ben Russell, Yuki Numata (violin); Nadia Sirota (viola); Clarice Jensen (cello); Bob Burger (accordion, piano, harmonium, pump organ, Wurlitzer organ); Sebastian Steinberg (acoustic bass, electric bass); Brian Blade (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Tucker Martine. Recording information: Famous Tree Studio; Flora, Portland, OR; Second Story Sound, NYC; Tainted Blue Studios. Six long years after the release of Comfort of Strangers, singer and songwriter Beth Orton issues Sugaring Season, her debut offering for Anti. Producer Tucker Martine helmed all ten tracks at his studio in Portland, Oregon. He and Orton enlisted a "dream band of new and old friends." The players on these sessions include jazz ber drummer Brian Blade, guitarists Marc Ribot and Ted Barnes, keyboardist Rob Burger, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, folksinger Sam Amidon helping out on vocals, and chamber strings. The full-band approach has become a natural fit for Orton. ~ Thom Jurek

Editorial Reviews:
Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There is something elemental about Orton's folk soul; at its best, it sounds like the world's prettiest campfire music, all hickory smoke swirling into a starlit sky." Q (Magazine) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Orton's light but emotive voice is used to its fullest capabilities of colour and tone, over acoustic guitars, piano, organ, drums and restrained strings." Mojo (Publisher) (p.90) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[E]ven in Beth's vocal comfort zone, her acoustic band, produced by Tucker Martine, enrich some beguiling songs with not a dud among them." Paste (magazine) - "SUGARING SEASON emerges as the most beautiful, uplifting and cohesive album Beth Orton has ever recorded."
