Released in 2002, this remarkably comprehensive four-disc box set presents saxophone titan Ben Webster performing as both a bandleader and with other ensembles. Focusing on Webster`s 1930s and `40s output, BIG BEN finds the revered reedsman sitting in with many of the era`s biggest names, including Duke Ellington, Jack Teagarden, and Slim Gaillard. Although the big-band numbers here are undeniably great, the finest moments of this collection are when Webster takes center stage himself, as on the rollicking "Teezol" and "The Jeep Is Jumpin`," which showcase his deep, resonant sax sound.
