Behind the Lines is W. E. B. Griffin's powerful novel of World War II -- and the courage, patriotism, and sacrifice of those who fought it.

By 1942, the Japanese have routed the outnumbered American forces and conquered the Philippines. But deep in the island jungles, the combat continues. Refusing to surrender, a renegade Army officer organizes a resistance force and vows to fight to the last man. A Marine leads his team on a mission through the heart of enemy territory.

And the nation's proudest sons fight uncelebrated battles that will win -- or lose -- the war . . .

    • Behind the Lines-W.E.B. Griffin

Behind the Lines is the quintessential book of WWII. Griffin captures the faint glimmer of hope the American public had in the early days of WWII. For those of us who lived with loved ones in the Phillipines, it returns us to a time when America was reeling from defeat after defeat as Griffin has FDR describe it. Although abridgement writers consitently leave out the conversation between Chief Dougan and Mrs. Fertig, Griffin has captured in those few lines what it really was like to suddenly find that your husband is alive, perhaps not well, but alive. For those fireside generals of late, this is not the book for you--you simply will never understand. For the rest of us, it is American history in the making. I intend that my seven-year-old grandson grows up knowing what a sacrifice these men and women made to keep us free.
