In addition to being a medical doctor, Mary Pullig Schatz is a certified Iyengar yoga instructor. Her book BACK CARE BASICS, first published in the early 1990s, has helped countless people overcome backaches, neck discomfort, and spinal ailments through the use of yogic techniques and postures. She begins with three very thorough introductory chapters, describing the basics of yoga in general, the anatomy of the spine, and how to move after surgery. Then she provides instruction in relaxation techniques and yoga postures with an emphasis on correct alignment. She encourages the reader to keep a progress diary and prescribes specific exercises for ailments such as sciatica, scoliosis, and chronic neck pain. Appendices include a glossary, a flexibility assessment sheet, and lists of other resources and books.
