Baby Signs

When I first used this book with my first child four years ago, I was simply curious but not convinced that it would work. To my amazement, at eight months, my daughter used the light sign when I turned on the nursery light and picked up about 50 signs before she turned one. With my second, I had to work right away and wasn't as diligent about using the signs. But, sure enough, all of the ones that I managed to show her a few times, she has picked up. At ten months, she is communicating about a dozen words like (hat, drink, fish, bear, sleep, hot and cheerios). Both kids used to be "grunters" before learning to sign. That is, when they became frustrated, they used to grunt loudly and turn red in the face. Like magic, the grunting stopped after they learned to sign. My first child, who is now four, still remembers her signs and can "speak" with her little sister. I also think that signing is the reason why my first daughter was able to learn to speak so quickly at about one year old. She would start off signing, then gradually, say the word and sign at the same time, and then months later, would "retire" the sign and just say the word. I love this book and have given several copies to friends as gifts.
