Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 was originally released in 1969, not in time to have BJ Thomas` first number one single, "Raindrops Keep Fallin` on My Head," be included on the collection. Other than that significant omission, the compilation is an excellent overview of Thomas` first few years of hit-making, made even better on Varese Sarabande`s 2000 reissue, which includes the three charting singles that didn`t make the original release -- "Tomorrow Never Comes," "It`s Only Love," and "Pass the Apple Eve." If you can overlook the absence of "Raindrops Keep Fallin` on My Head," this is a really nice compilation of his `60s work, but many casual fans might want to seek out Rhinos` The Very Best of BJ Thomas, which covers all of his Scepter recordings up until 1972, not just the `60s cuts. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
