The Last Lecture (Audio, CD) [Unabridged]

Edition: Unabridged
Author: Pausch, Randy

Description: "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." -Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Publisher's Weekly Review ...
Made famous by his ¿Last Lecture¿ at Carnegie Mellon and the quick Internet proliferation of the video of the event, Pausch decided that maybe he just wasn't done lecturing. Despite being several months into the last stage of pancreatic cancer, he managed to put together this book. The crux of it is lessons and morals for his young and infant children to learn once he is gone. Despite his sometimes-contradictory life rules, it proves entertaining and at times inspirational. Surprisingly, the audiobook doesn't include the reading of Pausch's actual ¿Last Lecture,¿ which he gave on September 18, 2007, a month after being diagnosed. Erik Singer provides an excellent inflective voice that hints at the reveries of past experiences with family and children while wielding hope and regret for family he will leave behind. The first CD is enhanced with photos. Simultaneous release with the Hyperion hardcover. (May)

Great accompanyment to the book. I heard the lecture on-line, then read the book, and followed up with the audio version.

Purchased the book for my daughter, I bought the CD version for myself because I drive a lot. I had to wipe tears a lot. My daughter says this is one of the most beautiful life stories she has read. I have to agree. It make you realize what is most precious in life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. It was educational, funny, heartwarming and, at times, moved me to tears. This isn't a book about dying, it's a book about living life to the fullest and finding joy in the simple things. I would recommend it to anyone.

A lesson for living.,  May 21, 2008

This book is more than a word from the wise. A man who has all in life that any human being could ask for is told he has mere months to live. A renowned college professor, rather than waiting to die he chooses to not only LIVE his life, but to share his insights with all of us. A true revelation of not-so-common sense!
