The first time that I read Atlas Shrugged, it was a copy that I got from the public library. This was a few years ago. I now have my own copy, and am reading it for the 2nd time. It is one of those types of novels, to me. I will return to it again, and again. This is the best novel that I?ve ever read. It just barely beats out War and Peace. This is a big novel, with big events, big characters, and big consequences. It celebrates the potential, and the power, of the individual will. It is also a blistering critique of the `collectivist' mindset. I can see striking similarities to things that are going on in the world, today ? and this was written over 50 years ago.If you believe that each of us is the captain of our own ship, and the ultimate determiners of our own destinies, then Atlas Shrugged is for you. If you believe that we all are responsible for each other, and that `someone needs to do something' - then do not read this novel, it will only make you cringe.
Ms. Rand's theory, "Objectivism," as espoused in her epic tome, "Atlas Shrugged," is timeless, and thus as important today - perhaps more so - than when she finally completed it in 1957. I cannot recommend it enough. For every person who firmly believes that the individual possesses inalienable rights (as declared in our very own Declarationof Independence), i.e. life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, this is a must read.
