Those who thought that smoke machines and cobwebbed candelabras were the stuff of Halloween parties and dance clubs need to think again. In Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, these moody set devices--and countless others--make every scene an atmospheric vision of souped-up 19th-century Gothic bliss. Christine Daee (a luminescent Emmy Rossum) is a tortured young star who is haunted by the voice of the phantom (Gerard Butler--who also played the lead in DRACULA 2000), a musician who hides in the shadows to hide a facial disfigurement, yet sings to her obsessively. Dwelling in the dark, damp chambers beneath the Paris opera house, the phantom lords over the cast and management with artistic autocracy--he writes the shows, casts them, and threatens all who disobey his plans with dramatically violent outbursts. But when his young student Christine falls for the rich and dapper Raoul (Patrick Wilson), the phantom descends into madness. Webber's memorable songs are performed with aplomb by Rossum, whose background includes singing with the Metropolitan Opera, and Wilson and Butler provide ample accompaniment. One of the treats of the proceedings is Minnie Driver's deeply exaggerated portrayal of the jealous diva, giving this PHANTOM a very appropriate dose of comic relief.

The Phantom of the Opera

mariacarmella from Long Island, NY, Oct 11, 2007

By far, the absolute BEST production I have ever seen of this sad story of both love and horror. Gerard Butler is perfect in this role, with a very strong, hypnotic presence precisely portraying the role with great mystery and intrigue. At the same time he brings raw force, power and fear as well as very deep, hidden overwhelming love. Misunderstood and abused as a boy because of his facial deformity he escapes the imprisonment of chains, constant ridicule and beatings with the help of a compassionate woman who brings him to the opera house. There he becomes a master of music - an incredible display of his hidden and genius talent - composing operas to be performed in "his" theatre. He falls desperately in love with Christine, with a voice of an angel, and in her confusion, desire for love, and ambition to perform opera, she is lured into the false preception that he is sent to her by her dead father to help her to be all that she can be as an opera singer. The Phantom trains her to be an opera star, singing his music and she is falls powerlessly into his plan for her to be his. Until, that is, a boyhood sweetheart comes upon the scene and professes the love he always had for her. She is then torn between the two of them, being lured by the Phantom into his world, and then being shaken into reality by the truth of that world - the only life the Phantom has known. A true love story - this rendition cannot be missed!
