Whereas most of the finer boogie woogie pianists went unrecorded and were therefore lost to history, the great Ammons cut several sides during his time and helped preserve this vibrant music for posterity. THE BOOGIE WOOGIE MAN, recorded between 1938 and 1946, encapsulates the rich and earthy spirit that made Ammons the master of the boogie woogie style. The primitive recording technology of the time offers our only link to this bygone era, but Ammons` pumping left hand and seemingly tireless right hand transcend such limitations.
Ammons is joined here on several cuts by some of the most notable musicians of the time, including J.C. Higginbotham (trombone), Sid Catlett (drums), Don Byas (saxophone), and Hot Lips Page (trumpet). But it is the solo performances and Ammons` piano duos and trios with Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson that ignite the most fire and really show what boogie woogie piano is all about.
