Released in 2008, Dante is French rapper Abd al Malik`s first album since he won France`s prestigious annual music prize, Prix Constantin, in 2006. The album breaks with the usual hip-hop attitude of always looking forward and reaches back into France`s rich musical history for some help and inspiration. Jacques Brel`s pianist G?rard Jouannest writes half the music here while Alain Goraguer, who arranged most of Serge Gainsbourg`s early efforts, handles the orchestration. The album`s title is a reference to the 14th-century poet Dante Alighieri, the author of The Divine Comedy. ~ David Jeffries
