I recently purchased a 1 inch combination egg crate foam and memory foam mattress topper for the sofabed. It is thin enough to roll up and store in the closet when not in use (most of the year), but it did almost nothing to pad the bumps or add comfort to the thin sofabed mattress, but I liked the way the memory foam felt. I then bought a 4 inch thick king topper for my bed, comprised of a 2 inch egg crate foam mattress attached to a 2 inch memory foam mattress. On the plus side, I found that I woke up without feeling achy in my hips and back for the first time in years. However, there were some problems with it. It came with a zip on washable cover, which I liked, because it sounded sanitary. But the cover was made of a silky cotton fabric that made the topper slide all over the bed nightly. I removed the cover and replaced it with a washable cotton mattress pad, which helped a little, but not much. I then bought a non-slip rubber product intended to keep area carpets from moving and put that between the topper and the mattress, which also helped, but the topper still moves down every couple of days and it's so heavy, it's hard to pull it back up without removing the fitted sheet, which brings me to the next thing. The 4 inch topper was so thick, I had to buy all new deep pocket fitted sheets, which are expensive and hard to put on and remove. But the most annoying problem I had was that I'm one of those people who always feels warm and I ended up kicking off and pulling on the blankets all night. So, I decided to move the 4 inch mattress topper into the king guest bedroom and go for the extra money to buy this 2 inch gel/memory foam topper, which is supposed to make you feel cooler than regular memory foam. After about a month, I'd say the difference in temperature was minimal, but my stiffness in the morning was back and I still had to drag the heavy topper up every couple of days. So, I moved the 4 inch topper back to my bed and put the 2 inch gel topper in the guest room. If you decide to buy this 2 inch gel topper, bear in mind that may not relieve any aches and pains in the morning and it might even cause some when you have to slide the topper up every day or two. It won't keep you measurably cooler than a standard memory foam mattress topper. It's more expensive than even the 4 inch topper, but you will save money because you won't have to buy new sheets, mattress cover and possibly even a non-skid pad. Also, I would recommend against buying a cover for any mattress topper unless it features a surface that will help keep the topper from slipping around on the mattress. A washable cotton mattress pad will probably cost the same amount of money and it will leave the topper in contact with the mattress, which greatly reduces slippage and movement. Finally, the odor from this gel topper is minimal to non-existent, and it expanded to full size in a matter of a couple of hours. Pleasant dreams!Read More
