Smooth, Crisp
 from NH,  Nov 3, 2010

I've been looking for smooth, crisp, old-fashioned percale sheets for so long. These are everything I've been wanting. They are just like the ones I remember from my childhood. They almost crackle when you unfold them. They're NOTHING like the flimsy, limpy, hot sateen ones you see everywhere now. A high thread-count does NOT mean crisp. You can buy 1000 thread-count and you get "limp". Percale with a 300 thread-count like these sheets is absolutely perfect. It's a nice, dense, smooth weave with a beautiful crispness. I got the white-on-white color in king-size. The fitted sheet fits a very thick mattress easily. The flat sheet is huge. The pillowcases fit king-size pillows with a generous amount left over to show the pretty design on the end. Wash the sheets and pillowcases by themselves in cold or warm water with a minimum amount of detergent and NO fabric softener. Fabric softener puts a film on the sheets and eventually changes the actual texture of the threads. If your machine has an extra rinse cycle, use it. Dry them on a delicate setting and take them right out as soon as the dryer stops. Better yet, hang them outside in the fresh air for a heavenly smell. I got rid of all of my old sheets and will be ordering additional sets of these beauties.

Know what you are getting
 from Colorado,  Sep 17, 2011

OK. So when it comes to sheets you have to understand what you are asking for. When I say that I want smooth crisp sheets, I do not necessarily mean soft. I want crackly (not starched), smooth sheets. If you want soft sheets go with a sateen, they are less wrinkle but they come at the price of being limp. Percale sheets are more likely to be crisp and these fit the bill. These are going to be a loud wrinkly mess coming out of the washer and you will need to work on them. I am willing to hang dry and iron my sheets to get the feel that I want. These sheets will not make you happy if you are not OK with that. I have not tried these sheets in the dryer yet, not really sure if I want to. One reviewer said that they were like paper that you have scrunched into a ball and tried to make flat and she was right. That is what I wanted because I am willing to iron them to make them smooth. The result is a sheet that is the crispiest that I have had since my grandma’s house as a kid. If you do not have the time or desire to spend the time on the sheets or you want no wrinkles right out of the dryer, these are not the ones for you. I, however am about to buy two more sets so that I can always have a set ready and waiting. I am so happy to have finally found my dream sheets!

I LIKE!
 from NC,  Jun 1, 2011

I love crisp cool sheets and they are harder to find. So many sheets are limp and warm no matter the thread count or the cost. For me, these percales are great. Yes, they are crisp, cool and silky smooth. They sound and feel starched and I think they feel fabulous. I run away fast when I hear a sheet described as soft instead of smooth. Dry the flat sheet by itself, the fitted sheet by itself and then the pillowcases. It doesn't take any more time and it cuts down on the wrinkles by not having so much in the dryer at one time. I dry all my sheets this way. I also keep a clean tennis ball in my dryer and that helps with wrinkles also. Take sheets out of the dryer as soon as the cycle is finished. If you have trouble sleeping when you are too warm then these sheets help keep you cooler. I have paid twice as much for percales. These are a good buy>

Love these sheets!
from Jacksonville, FL,  May 6, 2011

These sheets are similar to what our mother used to buy in the 60's: crisp, cotton, cool sheets that do not hug your body. My sister and I have been looking for them for years. They are, in my opinion, the perfect cotton sheets. Some of the other reviews say they are noisy however I would not call them noisy, they are just not the sateen style that are super quiet. And they do not mold to your body like sateen does. In fact, that is exactly what I love about them. After the first wash (always wash before sleeping on them), they are simple perfection. As a side bar, these sheets are healthier for you as they easily absorb moisture that you emit during the night where sateen tends to repel moisture. I became a linen fanatic 10 or so years ago so am always on the hunt for the perfect cotton sheets. These are a WINNER!

Can't Recommend
 from CT,  Jul 27, 2011

I had read many of the reviews about this product and can honestly say there was maybe 2 accurate. True: these sheets come out of the dryer unbelievably wrinkled, crinkled and looking like you took a sheet of paper and crunched it up in a ball then tried to flatten it out. These are not percale sheets! I would also state that percale sheets do not have a stretch factor. These sheets actually have a stretch or give like fabric used in stretch trousers. I can't imagine anyone giving these a good review.

Very poor construction - not as described
from Myrtle Beach SC,  Jul 1, 2011

I was looking for the old percal 100% cotton sheets and these are not them - the construction is very poor but you could live with that if you could live wtih the sound they make - you would have to wash them before you could even attempt to use them but after I washed them I still would not put on the bed - never heard so much noise when trying to fold them - also the wrinkles are unbelieveable - you can not even iron them out - I am going to keep on looking and hope they will take them back becasue otherwide I will just trash - theese sheets cost far too much for them to be like this - never seen any sheets like these before - please do not order

  • How did the color on site compare with the actual product? Color Ok
  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. Poor construction -sound like paper- feel like paper - not like old percal sheets at all
  • How accurate was the on site description of the product? Sheets are so cheep to the touch and the sound will drive you crazy

Great old fashioned percale
from Washington State,  Aug 26, 2011

There is just nothing that beats old fashioned percale sheets, especially on a hot summer night. I have my mom's and grandmother's old sheets, but they are wearing thin. I needed sheets for the guest bedroom, found these, and took my chances they were just like my old percale ones. The greatest compliment was when my guest slept on them, asked me the next morning what kind of sheets they were, I said percale, and she said she LOVES them, they're so crisp. Mind you, I hadn't sprinkled them and used a dry iron like my mom did in the old days, nor will I. I don't mind some wrinkles out of the dryer, and they come out with use or with folded storage good enough to please me. Bright white, crisp, cool on a hot night, I'm very pleased to still find good old fashioned percale sheets. And the embroidery adds an elegant touch. Thank you, overstock.com.

THE BEST SHEETS YOU WOULD EVER SLEEP ON!
from Cincinnati, Ohio,  Jul 3, 2013

I love these sheets as much as I have loved all the embroidered and lace percale sheets I have purchased at Overstock. I gave my queen size sheets to my daughter because we purchased a king size mattress. I had 4 sets of embroidered and lace percale sheets from Overstock for a period of 3 years. They were still in great and perfect shape. This is the reason I returned to Overstock to purchase my new sets of king size percale sheets. They are so crisp when you wash them. Just reminds me of the fresh smelling and crisp sheets I grew up with. ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!! The people who complain about these sheets being wrinkly and crisp after washed, it is because they do do not know what 100% cotton percale is. Besides, ALL 100% cotton fabrics wrinkle when washed. This is the reason, polyester was developed into fabrics...to get rid of wrinkles. Polyester is a term often defined as “long-chain polymers chemically composed of at least 85% by weight of an ester and a dihydric alcohol and a terephthalic acid”. It is a synthetic resin in which the polymer units are linked by ester groups. OK, I really do not like sleeping or resting my body against a fabric with this component. If you want limp, wrinkle free sheets, that is what you get. I wash my percale sheets in either cold or warm water. Most of the time, I just lay them over my railing to dry. My mother used to hang them on a clothesline. Other times, I dried them in the delicate cycle of the dryer. I just fluff them up and fold them. I do not iron them. The fitted sheet stretches out when placed on the mattress and it doesn't show because of everything else on top. The pillow cases do eventually stretch out and so does the flat sheet. Since my flat sheet is under the comforter, I just fold the sheet over it at the top and it looks fine. In other instances, when I'm expecting company or I am in the mood, I have ironed just the pillowcases and only the top folding part of the flat sheet that shows. I WOULD NEVER BUY OR SLEEP IN ANY OTHER SHEETS BUT PERCALE 100% COTTON SHEETS!

Finally!!
from Bedford, nh,  Oct 19, 2010

I have been looking for crisp sheets for awhile now. The ones I presently have on the bed are silky, flimsy, and can be rolled into a ball the size of an orange. We hate them. I think they're Egyptian cotton. We found out that the crispiness we were looking for are in percale sheets. I ordered 2 sets of sheets--one king percale for one bed and I couldn't find percale for the CalKing bed, so I ordered 100% cotton. Not as nice and a little soft. We do not like soft sheets. We like the feel of climbing into a fresh, crisp bed. These were perfect. I would recommend them to anyone who likes crispiness.

Worth Every Penny
from Seattle, WA,  Jul 26, 2013

It's not that easy to find good percale sheets, and especially at a good price. This is a great find. The sheets are beautiful and feel so good. They're not super soft because they're not sateen sheets, but they are definitely appropriately soft. Percale should have a crispness to it. As for the wrinkles, it is true that this want to wrinkle quite a bit. Fortunately I have a great gadget that takes care of this issue, and the sheets are smooth and comfy. l It's called a clothesline and I highly recommend it.

Finalloy--Cool Crisp Sheets!
from Goodyear, AZ,  Jun 19, 2013

I recently moved to Arizona from Seattle and quickly discovered that all of our sheets--most of them microfiber with high thread count were too hot except one set which is percale. I then realized that percale sheets with a lower thread count were what I needed (I did a LOT of research) and then discovered they are very hard to find these days. When I was growing up these were the only kind of sheets there were. I am happy to say I found what I need in these sheets!!! I ordered a different set also from Overstock first and they are OK but not exactly what I wanted--not truly crisp and cool--so I decided to try these--PERFECT. In reading the reviews on these sheets I had to smile at the comments about wrinkling--obiously there are a lot of people that don't realize wrinkling is the nature of the fabric--like linen clothes--they wrinkle. Give me wrinkles any day!! These sheets are crisp and cool!!! I also saw one person commented these are 'thin'---they do not seem thin to me. Anyway--I love them and will be ordering more!!

I love these sheets. The gold embroidery on the pillow cases and top sheet really make the set look rich. I prefer the percale to the regular cotton because they feel so much smoother and satiny.

Just Lovely
from Torrance, California,  Oct 20, 2011

Percale sheets that are not only crisp but soft, are hard to find. These are amazing and I sleep so well. We have the white scroll and the green scroll.....the green scroll are much crisper but I happen to love that...my husband prefers the white scroll since they are not as crisp. I suppose you could say they are "noisy" as some of the reviews but if you know and understand real "percale" then this will not bother you. Yes in the beginning after a few washes they are wrinkled but that does not matter when it comes to cool comfort! Also, that is characteristic for Percale. Wash and dry a few more times and the wrinkles go away. Besides you are sleeping with them! I love love these sheets! Just bought the scolloped ones also in blue! They are softer like the white ones....

I looked long and hard for sheets like these. I'm not a fan of super soft sheets and prefer a crispy cotton percale to the soft sheets you find in the stores now. These are just perfect for my liking. The scroll embroidery is a nice finish touch, and the pockets are deep enough to accommodate my extra thick mattress. They wrinkle a little after washing them, but that is not a concern for me. My only disappointment is that they are not as thick a fabric as other cotton percales I have, but these were not as expensive either. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another set.
