Matelasse is from the French word 'matelasser' meaning to quilt, to pad. The fabric is woven in a special way in which it has two warps. It is this weaving process that creates the signature puckered, or quilted effect to the finished matelasse design. Matelasse can give the appearance of being padded, but actually has no padding or fill within the fabric. It can be used alone on the bed or paired with another piece of bedding to add layers.

Great!
I received a whole set of these for my king sized bed. I just love the material! It stays smooth and wrinkle free! The boarders stay crisp and looks very nice.

Great Quality
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of these shams. I own 20 standard pillow and none of them worked with the shams. I washed , and dried them hoping they would shrink, but they did not, (noticeably) A queen size pillow stuffed tightly in the shams works. These are so soft you can even sleep on them.
