Everyone has them -- those old towels that were beautiful when they were brand new but now are a little threadbare. Because towels tend to be quite durable, we don't purchase new ones often. However, when it is time to replace these essential household linens, you'll find many choices in a variety of sizes and colors.
A towel set usually contains six pieces: two bath towels, two hand towels, and two washcloths. Stock your home with at least two sets per bathroom; buy extra hand towels for the powder room. If you love to wrap up in a large, warm towel after a shower, purchase some bath sheets, which often measure at least 35 inches x 65 inches. Active individuals and families will need some colorful beach towels, too, to take to the beach or swimming pool.
Most towels are made of cotton, which is favored because it is soft, absorbent, and easy to clean. Turkish cotton towels are the most luxurious and the bulkiest. Egyptian cotton is known for its softness and durability. Cotton terry cloth is less expensive than Egyptian or Turkish cotton, but is still an excellent option for daily household use. Microfiber, a thinner yet more absorbent material than cotton, is becoming a popular material for bath linens. Bamboo towels are an increasingly available eco-friendly option.
