I put this at the bottom of the top stair step to keep from tripping over the lip. It worked perfectly and it came out to be about the same size as a regular gate but sturdier because it's butted up against the top stair step.

I purchased this gate to keep a 12 pound dog out of the living room. The two features I found attractive were the added height as compared with most baby gates and the fact the installation is not permanent.Overstock got the item to me promptly and without incident.Upon opening the item, we learned the "tension mounted" gate actually needed 4 screws to secure mounting cups in which the tension bars fit. So, we drilled 4 holes and mounted the gate as per instructions; so much for not permanent.The whole unit came loose and fell down with the normal closing of the gate. We tried tightening the tension bars more, but the frame started to bend and the gate jammed shut. The unit was still very unstable.Needless to say, this item is unusable and defective. Overstock has been good, and hopefully will take care of the return without hassle.
