Best Baby Gifts for New Dads
Are you searching for the best baby gift ideas for a new dad? Mom and baby usually get all the gifts and attention, so giving a gift to a new dad will be a much appreciated surprise. There are many creative and fun gifts to choose from when shopping for new dads. Check out these ideas for some of the best baby gifts for new dads. Digital camera/camcorder. Giving dad a digital camera or camcorder is a great way to help him record all of the many milestones and memorable moments in his baby's first months of life and onward. Not only will dad have new equipment to take as many pictures and videos of his new baby as he wants; he'll also love having a new gadget to figure out and play with. Baby carrier. Infant car seats are great for getting around town with your baby in a car, but there are times when an infant car seat is too bulky to carry while you're walking. Dads love holding their babies in their arms, but it's nice to have some hands-free time for multitasking, especially with a brand new baby. For this reason, one of the best baby gifts for new dads is a front or back baby carrier. A baby carrier gives dad plenty of baby-dad quality time while allowing dad to go for walks, run errands or do chores around the house. Dads will love being able to have their babies close, and most babies enjoy being in their carrier so much that they nod off within minutes of being strapped on. Diaper bag. There are plenty of stylish designer diaper bags available for moms but what about dads? Most dads dont want to carry around a women's diaper bag; get him a "dad bag" instead. There are many new masculine diaper bags on the market. These dad bags typically look more like standard backpacks or messenger bags but are designed with all of the handy compartments necessary for toting diapers, wipes, bottles and more. Masculine diaper bags will be a great hit with the new dad as he adjusts to life on the move with a little one. Parenting books. Many new dads are overwhelmed by the responsibilities of becoming a parent and would probably appreciate a little help understanding their new role. There are plenty of general parenting books available, some written just for dads, that cover topics ranging from baby health and baby development to a father's role and discipline. These books make some of the best baby gifts for new dads by providing them with a resource to answer some of their many questions about parenthood and serve as a reference for future dilemmas. Baby Accessories Checklist
Adding a member to your family is a major event, whether it is your first child or your sixth. When preparing for a new baby, there are many things you need to do. Shopping for baby accessories is a major part of the process. Many different baby accessories are available for purchase, and it is important to narrow down the field to find the ones that will be most helpful for you and your growing family. Sleeping accessories. During the first few months of your baby's life, sleep will likely become more of a focus than before your baby was born. Baby accessories that make your life easier by helping you and your baby sleep are important for the first several years of your baby's life and beyond. You may already know the type of bed you want to purchase for your baby, but keep in mind that there are many options, from portable cribs that can go anywhere to co-sleepers that can sidecar on your bed for convenience and bonding. If you choose to have your child sleep in his own room, opt for a baby monitor that will keep you in touch with him throughout the night. Audio and video baby monitors are both available. Feeding accessories. Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle feed, there are several feeding accessories that are essential and some other items that will make feeding time easier. Tips on What to Put in a Diaper Bag
Diaper bags come in all styles and designs, from trendy leather messenger bags to easy-care canvas totes. Once you have selected the perfect diaper bag, though, you need to fill it with the proper gear, so you will be prepared for anything your baby needs when you are out and about. In time, packing your diaper bag will become second nature, much like packing your own bag or purse. It is common, however, for new parents to have some anxiety about packing the right stuff for a trip out with baby. While different trips will require different essentials, here are a few basics that can help keep traveling with your new baby stress-free.
Steam Irons Explained
When you want to keep your clothing and linens wrinkle free, steam irons will do the job while consolidating your equipment and making the job as easy as possible. Steam irons eliminate the need to use a spray bottle while you iron and can help make it easier to avoid heater burns. Before you are able to figure out which is the best steam iron for you, it might help to understand some of the ins and outs of steam irons themselves. Whether you want a cordless iron, steam press, travel steam iron or a standard steam iron, there are a few things all the models have in common.
What to Pack for Africa's Highest Peak
Imagine that you are planning a trip that will take you from the equator to Antarctica in seven days. Now imagine that you have to limit the amount of gear you pack to 35 pounds or less. The task is getting more complicated. What kind of luggage would you choose and how would you pack for a trip that encompasses such extreme changes in climate and altitude? When Erica Davis, a paraplegic athlete, and Tara Butcher, a physically challenged athlete, climb Africa's highest peak, they will have to answer exactly those questions. The challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro rises from nearly sea level all the way up to 19,330 feet. The trail climbs from the hot bushland through rain forest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic glaciers up to the rocky Uhuru peak. A climb like Mt. Kili presents special challenges when it comes to luggage, clothing and gear. Being prepared for the weather and temperature extremes is a necessity, but it's also important not to pack too much. There is a 35-pound weight limit to each piece of luggage carried by a porter. Most climbers pack one 35-pound capacity bag to go up with a porter and one small daypack to carry up themselves. The daypack: Erica and Tara will have 7 days to summit Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. As they pass from one ecological zone to the next, their needs will change and so will the contents of their daypacks. Each day Erica and Tara will repack their daypacks in anticipation of the specific challenges of the day's journey. In general, their daypacks will include things like water, snacks, dry clothing, waterproof gear and sunscreen. The importance of keeping clothing and gear dry cannot be overstated. When choosing a daypack, a small to medium backpack made of lightweight, moisture-resistant material that comes with a removable waterproof shell will be ideal. It's also helpful if the backpack has convenient access to a water bottle compartment or can accommodate a water bladder. Plenty of pockets, zipper compartments and hooks are also handy. What to pack: A sturdy but lightweight water-repellant duffel bag with a capacity of about 35 pounds is ideal for the trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The bag needs to have room for plenty of layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing and layers of fleece clothing, as well as a waterproof layer. To save space, it's a good idea to pack clothing that does double duty, such as pants that easily convert into shorts. Aside from clothing, the climb will also require accessories like sunglasses, hats and gloves, plus equipment like trekking poles and a headlamp, as well as toiletries like sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Support the Challenged Athletes Foundation: Overstock.com and the C.H.E.K Institute are co-sponsoring Erica and Tara's climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness for athletes with physical challenges who wish to participate and compete in sports. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF raises funds to give physically challenged athletes the opportunity to stay active and competitive in the sports they love. To show your support for physically challenged athletes like Erica and Tara, donate now to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for the Fit 4 Kili Climb. Gym: One place where you'll always see duffels is in the gym, and for good reason: This versatile piece of baggage can hold all the gear you need. Canvas duffel bags are ideal for the gym because they allow you to store your workout gear, street clothes and any other items you may need -- such as water bottles and hygiene supplies -- and many canvas duffel bags can be thrown in the washer with your gym clothes, so you can keep them fresh. Benefits of Using a Travel Backpack When Traveling
Travel backpacks offer a number of benefits for all types of travelers and may be an attractive alternative to larger tote bags, duffel bags and miniature suitcases. Whether you're traveling with a backpack over a long distance or traveling by plane with a small backpack as a carry-on, use a travel backpack designed with extra compartments and tight-fitting, portable style to ensure a comfortable travel experience. Easy to stow and store: The design of a travel backpack makes it easy to store it in overhead bins in a bus, train or airplane. The soft sides of a backpack let it conform to tight storage spaces. Many travel backpacks have compression straps that let you cinch the packs contents down to take up less space. Comfort: Travel backpacks put less strain on your body than most other kinds of luggage because their weight doesn't pull on one side of your body. Travel backpacks are designed to evenly distribute their load on your shoulders and hips, making them easy to carry for several hours. Thick straps with lots of padding make it even more comfortable. Keeps travelers organized: Many travel backpacks are designed with several compartments to store smaller items, such as water bottles, a cell phone, MP3 player, PDA, passport and subway tokens. This makes it easier to stay organized while traveling, ensuring that all your basic items and accessories are within easy reach. Easy to move around: Probably the biggest benefit of using a travel backpack is the ease of movement it provides. You don't have to worry about dragging a rolling suitcase up a flight of stairs. A travel backpack is also easier to maneuver through a crowd of people than most other types of luggage. Protects items from the elements: Many travel backpacks are made with water-resistant and waterproof fabrics that protect your valuables no matter what the weather forecast may look like. Travel backpacks made with polywick fabric, ballistic nylon and other weatherproofing materials are especially beneficial for travelers who will be outdoors for most of their trip. Best Ideas for a Cowboy Birthday Party
Plan the perfect cowboy birthday party for your little cowhands and their posse with a Western-themed party. With the right decorations, games and food, you can create a hoedown that your child and his or her friends will remember for years to come. Find cowboy party supplies and crafts for a colossal cowboy party, and don't forget to capture every moment with your camera. Invitations. Create cowboy party invitations that look like "wanted" posters using recycled brown cardstock paper. Print a black-and-white picture of the cowboy or cowgirl of honor in the center and use an old-style font or block lettering. Include the time and place for the round-up on the cowboy party invitations. Use fun phrases such as "howdy partner" and "saddle up for the showdown" for added laughs. Ask guests to come in their favorite cowboy attire, including rugged jeans, flannels and boots. Decorations. For cowboy party decorations, cover tables with red and white tablecloths. Display "wanted" posters of the birthday cowboy or cowgirl throughout the cowboy party room. Add balloons in colors of red, white and blue. Shape strands of rope into lassos and place them on the tables or hang them on chairs. Use bandanas or a Western-themed fabric for place mats. Create large cutouts of cacti, horses and cowboys for decorations. Bales of hay, stalks of corn and other items can add to the cowboy party decorations. Place bottles of water or juice boxes in a wheelbarrow filled with ice for refreshments. Dress up. Costumes and clothing can add to the cowboy birthday party theme. Because all guests may not know each other, give each guest a name tag cut to look like a sheriff's badge. Use silver cardstock cut into star shapes and attach the name tags with safety pins or tape. Provide guests with bandanas in a variety of colors. Give each guest a straw cowboy hat and a water pistol for an authentic cowboy look. Games. Though cowboys can be serious, there is nothing like having several fun games planned for even the roughest, toughest cowboy to enjoy. If you're holding a summer party, tell all cowboys and cowgirls to bring their swimsuit for a shoot-out using water pistols. Have a galloping contest; use brooms as pretend ponies and have races to see whose horse is the fastest. Old-fashioned potato-sack jumping contests are easy to assemble. Hold a boot toss contest: Have children toss bean bags, gold coins or other cowboy party supplies into an old pair of worn cowboy boots. Food. Create an old-fashioned homemade spread, complete with a cowboy party cake. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs or sloppy joes are always a favorite for little cowboys and cowgirls. Salsa and chips, beef jerky and even pulled pork sandwiches are additional ideas. Corn on the cob and cornbread are traditional cowboy staples. Create a cowboy party cake in the shape of a hat, pony or boot to continue the theme. Goodie bags. Thank each guest for coming by giving them a galvanized pail filled with cowboy party favors. Fill each pail with a small amount of straw or hay. Add trail mix, gold coins and licorice rope to each pail. Tie pieces of raffia or fabric for additional decoration to the pail's handle. For other cowboy party favors, consider purchasing small plastic harmonicas, sheriff badges and cowboy figurines. View All Crafts Back to Guides Directory View All Crafts
