High Chairs & Booster Seats

When your baby is about six months old and ready for solid foods, you'll need a high chair for meal times. Some parents like to have a high chair as soon as their baby can sit up so she can join the family during meals, even if it is only to observe and not to actually eat. As with all baby furniture, the most important factor to consider when it comes to high chairs is safety. The next most important factor is the ease of cleaning the high chair, especially when you start feeding her strained peas.
Booster seats are similar to high chairs in that they provide a boost for children who need a little help reaching the table. High chairs are free-standing chairs with long legs and an attached tray. Booster seats are seats that sit on a regular dining chair; they're more appropriate for slightly older children who can sit up without assistance.
Choose a high chair with safety straps to keep your baby securely in place while in her high chair. Safety straps should at least go around your baby's waist and in between her legs. Additional shoulder straps increase the safety of the high chair once your baby is able to stand. A high chair tray should be easy for you to slide in and out, but should be secure enough that it is not easy for your baby to slide it onto the floor. Some high chair trays are fully removable so you can wash them in the sink or even the dishwasher. A high edge on the high chair tray will reduce the number of spills that make it to the floor and keep snacks within reach even when your child is experimenting with tossing snacks for fun.
When your child is a little older, you can switch to a booster seat. A booster seat allows your child to sit with everyone else at the table. She can adjust to being a big kid while still having the boost she needs to reach her food. Booster seats vary in design, but many are available with built-in safety straps. Once your little one is used to the booster seat you can try using one at a restaurant. Many kid-friendly eating establishments have high chairs and booster seats available to borrow when you're there for dinner; choose the one that makes you and your child feel the most secure.
