The transition from diapering to potty training is an important step in your child's life, and having the right potty chair can make all the difference. How do you know which potty chair to choose? The following tips can help you find potty training chairs that will make you and your baby happy at potty time.
What to Pack for Africa's Highest Peak
Imagine that you are planning a trip that will take you from the equator to Antarctica in seven days. Now imagine that you have to limit the amount of gear you pack to 35 pounds or less. The task is getting more complicated. What kind of luggage would you choose and how would you pack for a trip that encompasses such extreme changes in climate and altitude? When Erica Davis, a paraplegic athlete, and Tara Butcher, a physically challenged athlete, climb Africa's highest peak, they will have to answer exactly those questions. The challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro rises from nearly sea level all the way up to 19,330 feet. The trail climbs from the hot bushland through rain forest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic glaciers up to the rocky Uhuru peak. A climb like Mt. Kili presents special challenges when it comes to luggage, clothing and gear. Being prepared for the weather and temperature extremes is a necessity, but it's also important not to pack too much. There is a 35-pound weight limit to each piece of luggage carried by a porter. Most climbers pack one 35-pound capacity bag to go up with a porter and one small daypack to carry up themselves. The daypack: Erica and Tara will have 7 days to summit Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. As they pass from one ecological zone to the next, their needs will change and so will the contents of their daypacks. Each day Erica and Tara will repack their daypacks in anticipation of the specific challenges of the day's journey. In general, their daypacks will include things like water, snacks, dry clothing, waterproof gear and sunscreen. The importance of keeping clothing and gear dry cannot be overstated. When choosing a daypack, a small to medium backpack made of lightweight, moisture-resistant material that comes with a removable waterproof shell will be ideal. It's also helpful if the backpack has convenient access to a water bottle compartment or can accommodate a water bladder. Plenty of pockets, zipper compartments and hooks are also handy. What to pack: A sturdy but lightweight water-repellant duffel bag with a capacity of about 35 pounds is ideal for the trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The bag needs to have room for plenty of layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing and layers of fleece clothing, as well as a waterproof layer. To save space, it's a good idea to pack clothing that does double duty, such as pants that easily convert into shorts. Aside from clothing, the climb will also require accessories like sunglasses, hats and gloves, plus equipment like trekking poles and a headlamp, as well as toiletries like sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Support the Challenged Athletes Foundation: Overstock.com and the C.H.E.K Institute are co-sponsoring Erica and Tara's climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness for athletes with physical challenges who wish to participate and compete in sports. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF raises funds to give physically challenged athletes the opportunity to stay active and competitive in the sports they love. To show your support for physically challenged athletes like Erica and Tara, donate now to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for the Fit 4 Kili Climb. Tips on What to Put in a Diaper Bag
Diaper bags come in all styles and designs, from trendy leather messenger bags to easy-care canvas totes. Once you have selected the perfect diaper bag, though, you need to fill it with the proper gear, so you will be prepared for anything your baby needs when you are out and about. In time, packing your diaper bag will become second nature, much like packing your own bag or purse. It is common, however, for new parents to have some anxiety about packing the right stuff for a trip out with baby. While different trips will require different essentials, here are a few basics that can help keep traveling with your new baby stress-free.
Benefits of Using a Travel Backpack When Traveling
Travel backpacks offer a number of benefits for all types of travelers and may be an attractive alternative to larger tote bags, duffel bags and miniature suitcases. Whether you're traveling with a backpack over a long distance or traveling by plane with a small backpack as a carry-on, use a travel backpack designed with extra compartments and tight-fitting, portable style to ensure a comfortable travel experience. Easy to stow and store: The design of a travel backpack makes it easy to store it in overhead bins in a bus, train or airplane. The soft sides of a backpack let it conform to tight storage spaces. Many travel backpacks have compression straps that let you cinch the packs contents down to take up less space. Comfort: Travel backpacks put less strain on your body than most other kinds of luggage because their weight doesn't pull on one side of your body. Travel backpacks are designed to evenly distribute their load on your shoulders and hips, making them easy to carry for several hours. Thick straps with lots of padding make it even more comfortable. Keeps travelers organized: Many travel backpacks are designed with several compartments to store smaller items, such as water bottles, a cell phone, MP3 player, PDA, passport and subway tokens. This makes it easier to stay organized while traveling, ensuring that all your basic items and accessories are within easy reach. Easy to move around: Probably the biggest benefit of using a travel backpack is the ease of movement it provides. You don't have to worry about dragging a rolling suitcase up a flight of stairs. A travel backpack is also easier to maneuver through a crowd of people than most other types of luggage. Protects items from the elements: Many travel backpacks are made with water-resistant and waterproof fabrics that protect your valuables no matter what the weather forecast may look like. Travel backpacks made with polywick fabric, ballistic nylon and other weatherproofing materials are especially beneficial for travelers who will be outdoors for most of their trip. Best Potty-Training Techniques
Potty training a child is no easy task. Although children will respond to each potty-training method individually, there are a few techniques that mothers swear by and experts approve. It is important to pinpoint your child's temperament before beginning the toilet training process and to experiment with different methods. Total potty training will not be achieved overnight, and parents should expect trial and error. Keep a schedule. Children respond well to schedules. If you have found that your child functions best with schedules for sleep and other activities, then a toilet training schedule is probably going to be effective. Build a reasonable schedule that is right for you and your child and be sure to stick with it. Be clear with nannies, babysitters and childcare workers about your child's potty schedule for the best results. Give rewards. The reward method often works well for children. Many children will find potty training more trouble than it is worth and rewards can give them an incentive to do their best. Determine a reward for your child. Small pieces of candy, sticker charts and pennies for their piggy bank are all good options. Explain the reward system to your child when you are talking about potty training. Make sure you frequently ask your child if she has to use the toilet, and take her to the bathroom each time she says she must go. If you prefer to avoid material rewards, use extra praise or a made-up song, dance or story as a potty reward. Let your child set the timetable. Waiting until your child is ready for potty training is highly effective, low stress and recommended by many pediatricians. When you feel the time is right, show your child how to use the toilet. Books, DVDs and CDs with toilet training lessons can also be effective. While this method will take some time and patience, eventually your child will take interest in potty training and get the hang of it. Using a schedule and reward system when your child is starting to comprehend potty training can help him make the connection. If your child is resistant to potty training, give him some more time and let him take a natural interest.
