Baby Mattresses

Babies require a lot of gear, and one of the first things they need is a bed. Baby beds, in turn, require baby mattresses, and there are a lot of choices out there. Overstock.com is here to help you find baby mattresses, baby furniture and more at discount prices even infants will appreciate.
Once you've chosen a crib, you need to find a complementary crib mattress. Crib mattresses should fit snugly inside the baby crib; make sure there's no room for a little arm or leg to get trapped. To double-check the fit of the baby crib mattress, stick a finger between the edge of the mattress and the crib; one finger should fit, two or more should not without some work.
Crib mattresses are available with two main types of construction: foam and innerspring. Foam crib mattresses used to be considered inferior because of the type of foam used; it would get hard and break into pieces. New regulations and advances in foam technology have led to foam baby mattresses that are both soft and durable; they are now comparable to innerspring crib mattresses. Foam mattresses will be lighter and easier to maneuver than innerspring, while innerspring baby mattresses may keep their shape longer. Whichever mattress type you choose, make sure it's firm enough to prevent your baby from sinking in while he sleeps.
Other baby mattress features to look for are a fire-retardant cover and a breathable design. Most mattresses these days are designed with fire-retardant fabrics, at least on the outer layer, but it never hurts to double-check. You can purchase mattress covers to add a waterproof layer of extra padding to the bed, making the mattress better for you and your baby. Breathable mattresses achieve air circulation with either several rows of miniscule holes or several larger holes on the side of the mattress. Most high-end mattresses will have holes incorporated into the design, but it is still possible to find unvented baby mattresses if you feel strongly against air circulation near your baby's head. Breathable and wicking fabrics can also help keep a baby mattress fresh and sweet-smelling.
