Although it may seem like everyone you know is getting flowers and making plans for a romantic dinner today, the truth is many people are alone on Valentine's Day. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's time to make the most out of February 14th by falling in love with the number one person in the world: That's you, girlfriend!
I've heard that something like 15 percent of American women send flowers to themselves on Valentine's Day, a practice I totally support. If you didn't send yourself any today, why not schedule a delivery for two weeks from now, just because? Every Jane, Jill, and Sally gets flowers today, but you're the goddess who's getting them on Random Tuesday, 2012.
And why stop with flowers? Why not buy yourself something as beautiful as you are: diamonds? The trend of right-hand rings seemed to fade when the recession hit, but things are looking up, so I think it's time to bring it back. Don't go overboard, of course. But a diamond ring under $100 could be just the thing to show yourself that you are committed and in this for the long haul.
But only if you can afford it, as Ms. Suze Orman likes to say. She has a point. A great way to prove that you're serious about your relationship with yourself would be to pick up her book "Women and Money" and give yourself the gift of financial security. Now that's love.
If today has an extra sting because you've recently gone through a break-up, it's time to forget about St. Valentine and start thinking about the words of St. Kelly Clarkson: "Since you've been gone, I can breathe for the first time. I'm so moving on. Thanks to you, now I get what I want."
So, what do you want? Take a deep breath and indulge yourself in one of the things your ex didn't understand, like an eccentric handbag. And don't forget that you can literally breathe better in a cozy cotton union suit than in some underwire and mesh lingerie.
Tonight, don't bother trying to fight the crowds at the restaurants. Stay home and relax. Order in, take a bubble bath, and download the new Sophie Kinsella book for your Nook. You have you. Happy Valentine's Day.

I'm definitely going to buy myself that ring. Happy Valentine's Day, self!!!!
Even though I'm single, I still decided to venture out last night, and grabbing dinner with a friend turned into waiting for a table for 40 minutes. I should have taken your advice and stayed in!
